About this report

We  analysed all equity investment into startups and high-growth companies in the North East between 1 January 2011 - 1 September 2016.

We examine the size and frequency of deals in the region, the stage of evolution, sector and location of companies that are being backed, and the nature of the funders that are backing them.

Key findings

The region is in recovery from the nationwide equity investment slump, with deal numbers for the incomplete third quarter of the year already surpassing those from the previous quarter.

Tech is slightly less dominant in the North East than it is across the UK, but it's onwards and upwards for tech in the region.

Government backed investors still dominate the funding scene, and where involved in 45% of fundraisings from 2011 on.
