Academic spinouts are an important means of commercialising the cutting-edge research and intellectual property (IP) produced by the UK’s universities.

The past decade has seen 1,130 unique academic spinout companies secure equity funding. While 2021 was a record high in the value of investment received at £2.73b, there was a decline in 2022 to £2.34b. Numbers from H1 2023 further reinforce this trend, which is likely caused by challenging macroeconomic conditions.
