Spotlight on Spinouts 2023 — Beauhurst x Royal Academy of Engineering

The 1,166 active, academic spinout companies make up 2.52% of the UK’s high-growth business population but punch well above their weight. In 2022, these companies secured £2.13b in equity investment, accounting for 9.11% of all equity finance raised by UK companies that year.

In the third edition of the Spotlight on Spinouts report, we explore the demographics of the academic spinout population, including their top-origin academic institutions, their funding sources and their survival and exit figures. We also examine the contentious issue of equity stakes held by founders and universities.

Henry Whorwood
Managing Director

Advone writes copy, and performs data analysis and visualisation. She has written on the nature of Venture Capital Trusts, and worked on projects for Rawnet and Deloitte. She read Law at the University of East Anglia, where she acquired her undergraduate LLB.
Blanca Valencia
Graduate Associate
Blanca handles data analysis and visualisation, as well as copywriting. Prior to joining Beauhurst, Blanca graduated from Queen Mary University of London, where she was awarded a BSc in Computer Science with Management (ITMB).
Ethan Yip

Ethan carries out data analysis and visualisation. Before joining Beauhurst, Ethan graduated from the University of Bath, where he was awarded the degree of Master of Chemistry (MChem) and spent a year studying at the National University of Singapore.
