Seedrs and Crowdcube dominate the market, but Crowdcube facilitates significantly higher amounts – though over fewer deals – than Seedrs. The market is increasingly seeing new participation from specialist crowdfunding platforms, or those with specific criteria for the startups they fund (for instance, AllBright only funds female founders).
As with private equity and venture capital investment, technology dominates the market. The single largest deal was facilitated by VentureFounders, which saw £3.3m invested into Lightpoint Medical (previously Artemis Diagnostics).
