Foundations and cessations
Looking at Welsh company foundations and cessations, there’s a deviation from what we saw with England and Scotland. Wales had a record high number of cessations in 2025, 86.6k, much higher than last year’s total of 48.6k. From 2023, cessations have been increasing rapidly.
And we’re seeing a similar story with company foundations. Foundations in Wales climbed every year from 2016 to 2024, where Wales had an all-time high of 65.8k. However, they have since begun to drop each year, and in 2025 there was only 42.1k.
Equity investment in Wales
Our recent report, The Deal 2026, we looked at equity investment across the UK in 2025. According to our data, Wales had the toughest year of the devolved nations, with the number of announced deals falling by 26.0%. Total investment and average deal sizes also dropped, suggesting a slowdown in investor activity across the country.
Early signs in 2026 suggest an initial bounceback, per the Barclays Eagle Labs Regional Investment Map: and our team will track the findings through the remainder of the year.
Scotland painted a more positive picture in 2025. While deal numbers only increased slightly (up 0.86%), businesses still attracted £1.11b in equity investment, a 31.5% increase compared with the previous year.
